Law Enforcement Officers commit to many duties when they earn their badges, most importantly to Serve and Protect. But, as civilians and citizens in our communities, we also have duties. One of which is to support the very people who Serve and Protect us.

One of the tenets of Blue Love: Off the Cuffs is that it is imperative we back our blue, stand with our blue and shield our blue. What does this mean? Let’s break it down.

1.       Back: Support, encourage, thank. Our LEOs need to know we believe in them and won’t jump to conclusions until the facts have been given. Knowing the community has your back empowers our LEOs to do their jobs without fear of being attacked.

2.       Stand: It’s not enough to stand behind LEOs, we need to stand WITH them. We need to work hand-in-hand to keep our communities safe. It is important for us, as citizens, to care about our neighbors and do all we can to protect and serve each other.

3.       Shield: LEOs come under fire often, in the media and on social media. Shielding means blocking the blows, defending our LEOs and even stepping in physically when necessary. If a police officer is ambushed and you see it, help them! Do what you can. Too many people break out their phones to video but don’t help. We need to get over our fear and conquer evil

We will not stand by and allow our LEOs to be left out in the cold with no community support. It is time to act, join us.

I am a native Rhode Islander who is a wife, mother, sister, daughter and proud supporter of Blue Lives. My brother has been a police officer for the past 20+years and while he loves his job, the reality of it is, today's world is scary, times have changed and there is a continuous lack of respect for law enforcement. I am passionate about raising awareness on suicide prevention and mental health stigmas for police officers and first responder all over the country. I believe the more people talk about mental health, the less taboo it will be, espeically for the protectors.
